Join an instructor trained as a Certified Interpretive Guide and Wilderness First Responder to discover some of the most beautiful destinations in the Vail area that are only accessible via foot! Walking Mountains Science Center and the Vail Recreation District operate under special permits from the US Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management to provide learning experiences on public lands like few other guide services can offer! Transportation is provided to the trailhead from various locations from Vail to Edwards. Hikers should come prepared to spend the day on the trail – bring a lunch, rain gear, and plenty of water. Full-day hikes are geared towards hikers who are looking for a truly immersive experience whereas half-day hikes are more leisurely and will return to the Vail area by mid-afternoon. Children’s activities are offered Monday -Thursday, 10-12 pm from mid-June through mid-August. Programs are intended for children ages 5 to 10 years old. Hands on crafts and guided activities teach children about various aspects of the natural world. Classes are drop in (no reservation necessary) and are located in the Children’s Garden amphitheater. A $5 donation is suggested.

  Summer Reading Program for Kids & Tweens

Elementary students entering first through sixth grades, locals and visitors alike, are encouraged to join this free reading program. There are two separate group meetings each Tuesday afternoon from 1 – 3 pm.  One group of children entering grades 1-3 and one of children entering grades 4 - 6. During the younger program, weekly events include a read-aloud story,art activities, games and a special presenter.  The Tweens program has the same basic schedule; the first hour will be with our wonderful teen volunteers, exploring arts and activities related to our weekly program.  In the second hour, they  join the younger kids for the performance or presentation. With both programs there is an independent reading program.  Kids may sign up on our website and collect a reading log and/or Badge Quest packet.  They should keep track of their reading and may come in for prizes.
