In the Rockies, we are fortunate to be surrounded by an abundance of beauty and biodiversity. Learn the basic skills you need to identifying local plants and wildlife, as well as fascinating information about their historic and modern uses. What berries are edible, what plants might save your life if you were stranded in the backcountry? Our expert naturalists will teach you on a leisurely hike on various trails in the Vail area. While easier and slower-paced than full-day hikes, participants must be able to hike 3-6 miles at high altitude. Hike participants should bring rain gear, trail snacks, water and a camera. Participants should wear sturdy footwear that is comfortable. Transportation is provided from the Nature Center. Dogs are not allowed. Please call for hiking schedule and information about meeting locations.

Meet each Wednesday morning at the Vail Village Welcome Center on the top level of the parking structure for a free guided tour of Vail Village and the public art collection. After an introduction to the Colorado Ski & Snowboard Museum, the hour long tour winds its way through the Village with discussions of the history of the Vail Valley, the founding of Vail mountain, the master planning of the Village, and the importance of site-specific art. The Town’s public art collection includes 40 works ranging from painting, sculptures, murals, playground components, to site-integrated art.

The Town of Vail Public Library welcomes back local artist and author, Helen Hiebert, for two Personalized Paper Projects.

5:30 p.m. on July 23 join us for "Personalized Greeting Cards." Create your own greeting cards by learning techniques from Helen's latest book "Playing with Pop-Ups." Your custom-made cards will be perfect for any occasion year round.

Then at 5:30 p.m. on Aug. 27 will be creating "Brag Books." Learn how to cut windows in your envelopes and turn them into photo holders, and then learn a unique way to hinge the envelopes to create book pages. Whether it is your summer vacation photos or the newest addition to your family, Helen's mini- photo albums will be a memorable keepsake or gift.

Helen Hiebert is a nationally recognized papermaker and artist whose products have been featured in House and Garden, Country Living, Oregon Home, and Architectural Records magazines. Hiebert is the author of many titles including “The Papermaker’s Companion,” “Papermaking with Plants,” and “Paper Illuminated.”

Two days a week throughout the summer naturalist guides from the Nature Center lead participants on all-day hikes throughout the Holy Cross and Eagles Nest Wilderness areas. Hikes are at a pace that allows participants to enjoy the flora and fauna along the trail. Participants should be in healthy condition and accustomed to the altitude. Two days a week throughout the summer naturalist guides from the Nature Center lead participants on all-day hikes throughout the Holy Cross and Eagles Nest Wilderness areas. Hikes are at a pace that allows participants to enjoy the flora and fauna along the trail. Participants should be in healthy condition and accustomed to the altitude. Hike participants should bring extra clothing, rain gear, lunch, trail snacks, water and a camera. Transportation is provided from the Nature Center. Dogs are not allowed. Please call for hiking schedule and information about meeting locations.

FIZZ BOOM READ IS THE 2014 FREE SUMMER READING PROGRAM AT THE TOWN OF VAIL PUBLIC LIBRARY

This week's special presenter is the Minturn Anglers.

Summer Reading meets weekly from: June 10th - August 5th from 1 - 3 pm.

This summer we have three separate programs built into our annual Summer Reading Program. There is something for readers of all ages. We will explore all things scientific and technology based as Vail Public Library presents €œFizz Boom Read€ during their summer library program. Activities may include programs on simple machines, animal science, river entomology and physics. Kids read independently and keep a log to be eligible for prizes.

Each Tuesday, the two-hour summer reading program is from 1 - €“ 3 p.m. The first hour of fun encompasses log recording, crafts and games. The second hour features a special guest. Students entering 1st - 5 th grades will enjoy this weekly program.
