  Lunch with the Locals

The Town of Vail will sponsor another installment of its Lunch with the Locals series at noon on Wednesday, Aug. 23 at the Lionshead Welcome Center. Attendees will enjoy a presentation from Jeff Pieper of the Eagle County CSU Extension discussing strategies for creating an attractive native landscape with low water needs that will attract pollinators and wildlife. 

Experts from Walking Mountains Science Center, Eagle River Watershed Council and Town of Vail will be on hand to answer questions about what residents can do to help Restore the Gore. There will also be native seed mixes, stickers and informational brochures given away to attendees.

Intimate Evening: For Love of Rivers w/ Kurt Fausch For Love of Rivers will draw us into the international collaboration among stream ecologists to discover the strong hidden connections between rivers and their surrounding forests. Kurt will present the story captured in his book of the same title. “Like trees and music and good health, streams and rivers are a gift to us as humans… In the end, I believe we will need to understand how and why we love rivers, if we hope to conserve them”. KURT D. FAUSCH is a professor Emeritus in the Department of Fish, Wildlife, and Conservation Biology at Colorado State University, where he has taught for 33 years. His collaborative research has taken him throughout Colorado, the West, and worldwide, including to Hokkaido in northern Japan. His experiences in Japan were chronicled in the PBS documentary film “RiverWebs.” He has received numerous awards from the American Fisheries Society and the World Council of Fisheries Societies, and served as the acting Director of the Graduate Degree Program in Ecology at CSU.

Join a Naturalist for a gentle educational hike through aspen and riparian communities at our Avon location or through the forest atop Vail Mountain at our Nature Discovery Center location. Learn about the ecology and animal adaptations of this mountain environment. Come prepared to spend an hour outside with appropriate clothing, hiking shoes and water. The evening begins at the Vail Nature Center with educational activities, followed by a drive to a beaver pond where there is an active lodge. Bring warm clothes and a flashlight.
